Access to healthcare - a Medical Caravan at the heart of underserved areas in Morocco

In some regions of southwestern Morocco, seeing a doctor remains a daily challenge.

On May 17, 2026, a medical caravan organized by the MarocaVie association, supported by OLVEA, provided care to 198 patients in a single day, with 371 medical consultations conducted and 302 prescriptions delivered in the commune of Sidi Mbarek (Sidi Ifni province).

Behind these figures lies a clear reality - access to healthcare remains limited for many rural communities, where geographic isolation and lack of infrastructure are major barriers.

In response, medical teams travelled directly to the field, working as closely as possible with local populations to provide specialized consultations and concrete healthcare solutions.

A concrete initiative addressing real needs on the ground

Organized at Sidi Mbarek high school, this medical caravan addressed a wide range of healthcare needs in just one day.

With 371 consultations carried out, the initiative enabled tailored medical follow-up, sometimes across several specialties for the same patient.

Specialized care aligned with local healthcare needs

Consultations covered a range of essential specialties, highlighting the most urgent healthcare priorities in the region:

  • Ophthalmology - 141 consultations (38%)

  • General medicine - 87 consultations (23.5%)

  • Cardiology - 37 consultations (10%)

  • Laboratory tests - 37 consultations (10%)

  • Pediatrics - 35 consultations (9.4%)

  • Gynecology - 18 consultations (4.9%)

  • Ultrasound - 16 consultations (4.3%)

A total of 302 prescriptions were issued, providing direct and immediate access to treatment.

These figures highlight a strong demand for vision care and general medical services, particularly among adults and elderly populations.

Human and technical resources deployed

This medical caravan was made possible through structured organization and dedicated resources.

Human resources

  • 10 doctors

  • 10 nurses

  • 9 trainees

  • 8 coordinators

Equipment and logistics

  • 2 minibuses and 4 vehicles

  • 3 abdominal ultrasound devices

  • 4 biological analysis units (blood glucose, blood pressure)

  • 2 ophthalmology devices

This setup ensured a comprehensive care pathway, from diagnosis to treatment.

A structured project supported by dedicated resources

The implementation of this medical caravan relied on a structured budget, with key expenditures allocated to:

  • medication, representing the largest share of expenses

  • medical teams

  • medical equipment and testing

  • logistics (transportation, fuel)

  • on-site organization and support

  • communication and awareness tools

This allocation reflects a clear priority - ensuring access to both healthcare services and treatment.

A long-term commitment

This initiative is part of MarocaVie’s ongoing efforts since 2013 to bring healthcare services closer to isolated rural populations and respond directly to local needs.

Over the years, several thousand people have already benefited from these medical campaigns.

OLVEA’s commitment - delivering local impact

MarocaVie is primarily funded by OLVEA Morocco, which allocates part of its business activity to support social and environmental projects.

This model creates a direct link between economic activity and local impact.

Through this partnership, OLVEA is committed to:

  • supporting access to healthcare

  • contributing to local development

  • acting in a concrete and sustainable way for local communities

Beyond this one-day intervention, this medical caravan reflects a broader, long-term approach - reaching communities where needs are greatest, adapting to local realities, and delivering immediate and practical solutions.

Each consultation, diagnosis, and treatment contributes to reducing inequalities in access to healthcare, while strengthening the connection between medical teams and local populations.

This approach fully makes sense over time, as part of a continuous commitment to supporting communities and the territories in which they live.
